As part of the preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles will face the Warriors of Zimbabwe today at the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
After the clash with Warriors, the Super Eagles will round up their 2019 AFCON preparations with the friendly against the Terranga Lions of Senegal, this time in Egypt on Sunday, June 16.
Super Eagles friendly with Zimbabwe will be the seventh time both nations will play against each other.
Nigeria and Zimbabwe first met on August 1, 1981 with the Eagles losing 2-0 in an international friendly match which incidentally is Zimbabwe’s only victory against Nigeria.
They met five more time between 1989 and 2006 with the Super Eagles winning four games and drawing one.
The last match was on January 2006 at the Nations Cup in Egypt where Nigeria again defeated the Warriors 2-0. Christian Obodo and Mikel Obi scored the goals.
Meanwhile, today’s game which kicks off at 6pm may be prosecuted by players who did not play regularly for their clubs during the last season.
This hint was given by the technical adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr.
According to him, this is to give him opportunity to ascertain their physical and mental fitness ahead of the AFCON.
“I want to see a lot of players who are not playing so much, give them the opportunity to play,” Rohr told reporters in Asaba.
“It can be for some defenders like Balogun, he is fit but he didn’t play so much, so we want to see him playing on Saturday and also some players like Kelechi [Iheanacho].”
After the game, the Super Eagles will depart for Ismaila, Egypt on Sunday to continue their preparation for the AFCON.
Nigeria will be competing in their 18th AFCON tournament in Egypt and are drawn in Group B alongside Guinea, Madagascar and Burundi.
