LaLiga Santander: Real Madrid’s old guard refuse to fall
LaLiga Santander The at-risk players step up
Between rumours of signings, departures, changes of system and a complete squad overhaul, Real Madrid‘s current crop showed what they can still do in their 3-0 win against Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
Marcelo, Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Karim Benzema put in impressive performances and made it clear that they want their futures to be at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Keylor Navas is another and he kept a clean sheet against Athletic, denying Inaki Williams with an excellent save as he demonstrated to the Bernabeu crowd exactly why they want him to stay.
Marcelo also upped his game considerably and Zinedine Zidane‘s trust in him was rewarded.
“I have nothing to say about my future because everyone knows how happy I am to wear this shirt,” he said to beIN Sports.
“Madrid is my home.”
In midfield, Kroos and Casemiro also delivered while rumours about Paul Pogba and Christian Eriksen continue to swirl around the capital.
Luka Modric, too, has been clear that he’s going nowhere, and he’s only planning on playing even more matches for Los Blancos.
Benzema grabbed another few goals, as he has done all season, and he delivered a performance that makes people wonder why there have been reports of the club wanting a new No.9.
Whether Benzema plays alone or with a partner, he rarely disappoints and the Frenchman is doing everything that Gareth Bale isn’t: giving Zidane no reason to question his commitment and ability.
